SharePoint Portal Server 2007 New Features.

The new version of SharePoint (MOSS 2007), which is also called as Microsoft Office

SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007, has come up with many new features. Few of the important features which were missing in earlier version are listed below.

  •  Integrated with ASP.NET 2.0
  • Enhancements in content storage
  • Web content management – extension to Content management server (CMS 2002).
  • User Authentication Enhancements
    • Support Forms Authentication in addition to Window
  • Item Level Security
    • Earlier version support permissions only at document library level. One can now define permissions at document level.
  • Enterprise Search enhancements
    • Boolean searching, hit highlighting, indexing and search of business data through the Business Data catalog and many others  
    • Better search features, including "Best Bets" and alternate suggestions
  • New Workflow Engine  (Windows workflow foundation – WWF)
  • Allows designers and users to configure sophisticated multi-path, multi-action workflows for document libraries and lists.
  • List and document libraries can expose data through automatic RSS feeds.
  • New Site Templates
    • Blogs : Blogs for knowledge sharing
    • Wikis: Web pages that users can create and edit pages on the fly
    • Records Repository : Records Management in SharePoint 2007 allows you to create a repository to retain business documents that are necessary for regulatory compliance, business continuity, or historical interest.
  • Recycle bin for deleted items
  • Event handlers cover more events, and they can be synchronous
    • New event handlers support events not just for items (item created,item changed) but also for list (field changed, field deleted, field added, list created, list deleted and so on) and for site (site deleted).
    • Event handler for lists.
  • Enhanced email alerts, more informative, with filters
  • Facility to submit postings to WSS discussion boards via email
  • Version history for all list and library, showing what changes were made
  • Ability to set multi-line text fields as “Append-only” on any list
  • Lookup fields allow selection of multiple values
  • Lookup fields can reference fields on lists and libraries on other sites
  • Enhancements to Issue list template
  • Lists can receive incoming email and extract data
  • Enhanced Single sign-on (SSO) feature.
  • Custom Column Indexing to speed retrieval on large lists
  • New views can be based on any existing view (not just the default view)
  • Rendering of spreadsheets as HTML
  • Easy, no-coding creation of dashboards from Excel spreadsheets.
